Until 1990, in addition to health personnel in employment of the Ministry of Health, the data include the personnel who worked in health care institutions of the Estonian Railway, Estonian Airway and those belonging to the closed establishments of the Soviet Union.
Until 1990 and since 2003, the total number of physicians includes the number of doctor trainees.
The total number of physicians for the year 1991 includes only the data of the Ministry of Health and the Estonian Railway.
Starting from 2001 data of Central Prison hospital are included.
In 1945-1949 and 1951-1954 physicians including dentists and stomatologists.
Since 2013, the data on health care personnel are collected by type of job (i.e. occupation). Previously, the data were collected by type of medical education.
Since 2013, the data on physicians, dentists, nurses and midwives are November data; for earlier years, the data are as at 31 December. The data on pharmacists are as at year end.

* Medium-level medical personnel - nurses, assistant doctors and midwives. In 1940-1972 - nurses, assistant doctors and midwives only in the employment of the Ministry of Health. Caring nurses are not included in 2013.
